In a Council speech by the City of Cape Town’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato, he announced that the N2 MyCiTi bus contract for Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain routes are being reviewed; to find a positive way forward, with the assistance from the provincial and national government.

A way forward for the MyCiti bus routes

“In this city, we follow due process, no matter how challenging or difficult that may be, because that is the only way to ensure good governance and a corruption-free administration. Where we can be better, we set ourselves on a course to do that. Like with the N2 MyCiti contract that is currently being reviewed for the Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain routes.”

What is the issue that led to this?

This arises as the MyCiTI bus services were suspended for more than two months, following problems between the City of Cape Town and the lawyers of the N2 Express joint venture operating company, for the MyCiTi bus services through Cape Town’s central business district, Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha.

This is not a new problem as the dispute is centred around the Congress of Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta), who claims that the agreement between the parties favoured Golden Arrow and wanted minibus taxis to be given a greater role on the route.

What is the N2 Express joint venture?

It is the treaty between Golden Arrow Bus Services, Codeta, Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain Route Six taxi associations.

“This was originally intended to be a top-up service as a result of the near-collapse of rail service, that is run by the national government. While we have assistance, and cooperation from both provincial and national government on a positive way forward, the matter is in court at present which prevents me from speaking in more detail on it.”

How are the commuters affected by this MyCiti problem?

There are almost 6,000 commuters from Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain who used the MyCiTi bus service daily. Through this problem, the commuters had to find alternative transport to commute, as the City’s aim to help the failing rail service also led to some of its’ own problems.
