MUT student struck by lightning while asleep and dies

The Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has sent its condolences to the family of a student who was struck by lightning.

The Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has confirmed the death of one of its students who was struck by lightning over the weekend. 

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had forecast severe thunderstorms, hail and strong winds for parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Friday and the weekend. 

MUT ENGINEERING STUDENT STRUCK BY LIGHTNING 

In a statement, the university said Mpumezi Mndwentywa was a third-year student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. 

MUT Dean of Students Dr Thembi Kweyama said severe thunderstorms caused a fire which affected some of the rooms on the third floor of its off campus residents in Glenwood. Mndwetywa was reportedly asleep when he was struck by lightning. He succumbed to the burns he sustained.

“We pray that his soul rests in peace. Student Counselling will issue notices in due course regarding counselling services that will be provided to students affected by this tragedy,” Kweyama said.
