Two more green ships for MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises recently revealed that it has placed an order for two LNG-powered World Class ships to be delivered in 2026 and 2027.

As reported by travel news, the MSC World Europa and MSC World America, two of the most energy-efficient ships in the industry, will be designed by French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique to maximise energy efficiency via extensive use of heat recovery and other tech that will see the ships having a lower carbon footprint.

The vessels will also burn a number of alternative fuels, such as bio and synthetic methane and green methanol, as well as be fitted with the next-generation dual fuel internal combustion engines with reduced methane slip.

Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Cruises executive chairman, said that the World Class was a truly innovative ship prototype.

“We are committed to researching and investing in future environmental technologies as they become available, to ensure we continue progressing on our decarbonisation journey to reach nett zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050,” Vago said via travel news.

Most energy-efficient cruise ship in the world

MSC Cruises also only just launched its newest vessel, the MSC Euribia, back in June 2023, designed to be the most energy-efficient cruise ship ever built.

The ship is the marine magnate’s second vessel, the first being MSC World Europa, to be powered by LNG, which is the cleanest marine fuel currently commercially available.

“MSC Euribia is named after the ancient goddess Eurybia who harnessed the winds, weather and constellations to master the seas, furthering the vision of the ship to master the deployment of state-of-the-art technologies to protect and preserve the precious marine ecosystem,” said MSC Cruises.
