Just barely 24hours after the Springboks retained the Webb Ellis trophy at the Stade de France with a 11-12 win over New Zealand at the Rugby World Cup, South Africans have turned to social media to request President Cyril Ramaphosa declare Sunday a public holiday.

IS MONDAY A PUBLIC HOLIDAY?

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya on Friday hinted at the possibility of the country being granted a public holiday should South Africa win the world cup.

PRESIDENT’S SPEECH

Doctor and media personality Musa Mthombeni has even questioned whether if the Proteas, who are currently participating at the Crick World Cup in India, would the country be given another day.

“Rugby World Cup has been won. We have a theoretical public holiday coming up… Cricket World Cup is coming along nicely for the Proteas – do we get another holiday when they win too?” he wrote.

“Ramaphosa is taking too long to announce this public holiday I need to know whether I should wash my work clothes or carry with the springboks celebrations” lamented @OnhgumZulu.

The President is expected to address the nation tonight at 8pm, however it still not yet clear (at the time of publishing) what the address would be about.
