PHALATSE SAID THE DA NEEDS A DYNAMIC LEADER

Phalatse briefed the media at the Hector Pieterson Memorial in Soweto on Monday 30 January 2023. She said that the DA needs a dynamic leader who is familiar with the concept of ‘servant leadership’.

The announcement comes a few days after her ousting as Johannesburg mayor during a no-confidence vote.

She will take on John Steenhuisen at the official opposition party’s federal congress in April.

‘YEARS OF EXPERIENCE PREPARED HER FOR THE POSITION’

Phalatse said that her experience as mayor of the largest municipality in the country has prepared her to lead the Democratic Alliance.

“I have decided to make myself available for the position of Federal Leader at the upcoming federal congress scheduled to take place April 1st 2023.”

The former mayor believes that she is ‘the only candidate for this position who has had this rewarding experience.’

“I also believe that my many years of experience as a technocrat in government and as a politician have sufficiently prepared me for the position of DA federal leader. Leading a huge multi party coalition government in the City of Johannesburg, which is the economic hub of the country and continent, is not something to be taken lightly.”

According to Phalatse, South Africa is definitely at a crossroads.

“We, in the DA, however, need a relatable and dependable leadership that can win back the trust of the electorate and lead our party to a decisive victory in the upcoming 2024 general election, which is only a few months away.

I believe a re-calibrated DA under a different leadership – a DA that is engaged and in touch with the plight of the ordinary people – can serve as that political home for all South Africans.”

So far, Phalatse has been the only candidate to state that she is standing for the position.

The party will have its National congress in April over two days at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.
