Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Thandi Modise has rubbished claims that she has resigned from her position in Cabinet and in the ANC as fake news.

This follows a media article claiming that Modise has resigned to join uMkhonto We Sizwe (MK) political party, led by Jacob Zuma.

In a statement this week, the Minister said she rejects the claims or any insinuations that she harbours ambitions to leave the ANC to join another political party.

Modise slams fake news about her resignation

“I equally remain a committed servant of the South African people, having served as Member of Parliament in the first Parliament from 1994, the Speaker of the North West Legislature, the Deputy Secretary General of the ANC, the Premier of the North West Province, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, the Speaker of the National Assembly and currently the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans,” she said.

She added that reports of her resignation and the claims she has joind tthe MK Party were used by wedge drivers who are “hell-bent at undermining the unity of the ANC and creating instability in government”.

Public urged to be cautious of fake reports

The public has been urged to be cautious of consuming news from unverified sources.

This comes as the party expelled ANC Member of Parliament (MP) in KwaZulu-Natal Mervyn Dirks for joining the MK party.

In a letter to Dirks on Monday, the ANC said he has contravened the party’s rules.

“This letter serves to inform you that you have been expelled from the African National Congress (ANC) because you have joined another political party.

This action has been taken against you because you have admitted this yourself to the Provincial Secretary who is the Chief Administrative Officer of the organisation in the province.

This means that your membership to the ANC is terminated with immediate effect, and you will no longer represent the ANC as a public representative in the KZN legislature,” the letter read.
