DA Leader Mmusi Maimane in Pretoria Hivgh Court

As sure as night follows day, Mmusi Maimane follows up a Jacob Zuma blunder with unwaivering certainty.

The leader of the Democratic Alliance was grinning like a Cheshire Cat when speaking to media outside of the Pretoria High Court today. Judge Mlambo laid down a double-decision which has shook the President from his perch. Not only must he pay all legal fees for his appeals against state capture, but he cannot pick a judge to rule over the case.

Zuma’s state capture inquiry

Both decisions indicate that the President is now on seriously rocky ground regarding state capture. His appeals have been dismissed as frivolous, and his knowledge of the law has been called into serious question.

What was a bruising encounter for Zuma was an early Christmas present for Maimane, however. When giving his reaction to the decision, the opposition’s chief had a novel suggestion for how the President could pay the fees:

Mmusi Maimane reacts to the Zuma court decision

“The court has said the president is an irrational litigant. I call him a delinquent litigant. Somebody who has no legal basis but acting in self-preservation as one is a criminal. I think the courts today are putting their foot down. They’re saying Zuma must be personally liable not the taxpayer.

It’s the right judgement and we welcome it. Zuma must stop delaying South Africans. He must pay personally. The Guptas must sponsor his legal case. That’s if they’re interested.”

South Africa must now wait to see just when Jacob Zuma can be hauled in front of a court. Once very much in control of state capture, the last couple of months have seen the Commander-In-Chief lose his grip on the situation.
