Minister of Police and Justice update on Thabo Bester deportation

Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele and Justice Minister, Ronald Lamola are expected to update the nation on the progress of the deportation of convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester.

The briefing is set to take place this morning, Thursday, 13 April in Cape Town.

Bester escaped from the Mangaung Correctional Centre in Free State in May 2022 after staging a suicide in the prison. It was heard in court that Dr Nandipha’s father and a G4S former employee were the masterminds behind his ‘well-orchestrated’ escape.

The media briefing comes five days after an official delegation from South Africa comprising senior officials from the Police, Justice and Correctional Services and Home Affairs, departed for Tanzania to meet with their counterparts and engage in the process required to bring back the fugitive and his accomplice Dr Nandipha Magudumana.

Meanwhile, two more men had been arrested in the Thabo Bester escape case.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the one man is an employee contracted to a company that installs and maintains cameras at the Mangaung Correctional Centre.

The 44-year-old man was charged with aiding and abetting a convicted prisoner to escape from lawful custody, defeating the ends of justice, and violating a dead body.
He is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court on today (Thursday, 13 April 2023).
The other man is a 28-year-old driver while police seized in the North West a white Porsche Cayenne vehicle believed to belong to the wanted suspect, Dr Nandipha Magudumana.
