Minister Nzimande condemns fatal shooting of UJ student in Johannesburg

Minister Blade Nzimande strongly condemns the tragic killing of a University of Johannesburg student in the CBD, urging swift justice.

The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, Blade Nzimande, has voiced his strong condemnation following the tragic killing of a University of Johannesburg (UJ) student in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD) on 29 February.

The student was caught in the crossfire during a shooting incident in Braamfontein.

Minister Nzimande voices concern over student’s condition

Expressing his deep concern, Minister Nzimande also highlighted the critical condition of another student who sustained injuries during the same incident and is currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased student and wish the injured student a speedy recovery,” the Minister stated.

In response to the incident, Minister Nzimande announced plans to liaise with the head of the affected academic institution to ensure that both the affected students and their families receive the necessary support.

Furthermore, the Minister intends to engage with the Minister of Police to assess the situation comprehensively and collaboratively implement measures aimed at preventing a recurrence of such tragic events.

Nzimande condemns lawlessness culture

“We condemn this cruel act of lawlessness and emphasise that as a nation, we cannot tolerate the growing culture of impunity among criminal elements and their blatant disregard for human life,” Minister Nzimande asserted.

In light of recent events, the Minister urged for swift and decisive action to address the underlying issues contributing to such violence in order to safeguard the safety and well-being of all citizens.
