Mineral Resources Dept rules out Zama Zamas in JHB CBD explosion probe

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has ruled any possibilities linking illegal miners, infamously known as the Zama Zamas to the JHB CBD explosion.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE JHB CBD?

At least one person was killed and more than 40 injured when Bree Street in the JHB CBD collapsed after an underground explosion this week.

An underground pipeline gas was initially suspected to be the cause, however, this was dismissed by eGoli gas. Another speculation from many was the involvement of Zama Zamas who are known to mine without safety precautions and regulations.

DEPARTMENT OF MINERAL RESOURCES ON ZAMA ZAMAS

In a statement, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) noted the devastation caused by the explosion in Johannesburg City Centre and assured that there are no old mines in the area in which the explosion occurred.

“The DMRE is confident that investigations led by the relevant authorities which include the Gauteng Provincial government and the City of Johannesburg, will be able to ascertain the actual cause of the tragedy,” said  Ernest Mulibana, the DMRE media liaison officer.

“The DMRE regulates and promotes legitimate mining operations in South Africa and has a record of all legally operating and non-operating mines,” he added.

“The department is steadfast in ensuring that all licensed mining operations comply with the provisions of the law.”

He further said the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy stands ready to cooperate with the relevant authorities in finding the actual cause of the explosion.

ANOTHER EXPLOSION IN GAUTENG

Meanwhile, another explosion occurred earlier today, Friday, 21 July in Chloorkop in Kempton Park. It is reported that a 48kg cylinder which had ammonia exploded, leaving one person injured. This happens to be the third explosion within two days in Gauteng.
