Gauteng Education and Youth Development MEC Panyaza Lesufi has taken his frustrations out on the police following the robbery at a school in Midrand, Johannesburg.

Midrand school robbed: This is what was taken

As reported by Times Live, Noordwyk Secondary School was targeted by five unknown assailants and robbed of equipment worth R4.5 million.

Based on the images posted by Lesufi (see below), it’s believed that the suspects made their way into the school’s computer laboratory through the ceiling.

According to police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela, the suspects made off with an undisclosed number of computer equipment, laptops, as well as solar panels.

The details surrounding the incident are a bit sketchy at this time but Makhubela revealed that the school’s security guards were accosted by five armed men.

The robbers assaulted and tied the guards up with shoelaces at around 3:45 on Tuesday, before they rummaged through the Midrand school.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt during the ordeal.

This early on in the investigation, police have made no progress in finding the suspects. Lesufi, whose priority has been the untimely death of a Grade 10 pupil from Ferndale High School on Tuesday 11 February, was notified of this incident.

The Gauteng Education MEC took to Twitter to express his discontent with acts of criminality and threw shade at the police whose responsibility it is to keep communities safe.

This is the second reported school robbery since the start of the 2020 academic year. In January, four armed suspects entered Quarry Heights Primary School in Newlands East, Durban, with weapons drawn.

The suspects robbed teachers and staffers of their cellphones and cash. The suspects have not been arrested.
