Meter reader shot and injured in shooting in Durban

The man, believed to be a meter reader, was shot while walking back to his car on Thursday in Umgeni Park in Durban.

Paramedics said a man, believed to be a meter reader, was seriously injured on Thursday when he was shot while walking back to his car in Umgeni Park in Durban.


According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst, the shooting happened at 11H47 Thursday morning Netcare 911 responded to a shooting on Buttery Road in Umgeni Park, Durban.

“Reports indicate that an adult male, believed to be a meter reader, had been shot while walking back to his car.”

He said when paramedics arrived on the scene, they found that the patient had sustained serious injuries.

The man was given first-aid by members of the Marshall Security Special Operations Team.

“The patient was treated on scene by a Netcare 911 emergency care practitioner and, once stabilised was transported by ambulance to a hospital for further care.”

Herbst furthermore said the circumstances leading up to the man being shot would be investigated by the SAPS who were on scene.

Marshall Security Special Operations Team said it is believed the man was shot in an attempted hijacking.

“Upon the arrival of our Armed Response Officers and Special Operation Team members, it was established that the driver of a Toyota Tazz had been approached by two unknown suspects, one of which was armed with a firearm and attempted to hijack the driver of his vehicle.

“The motorist was shot twice during the incident, and the suspects managed to flee with only the victim’s cellphone and wallet, leaving the injured man in his vehicle.”

It said its members of our Special Operations Team attended to the victim and managed to stabilise him on the scene before handing him to Netcare 911 paramedics, who arrived on the scene a short while later. The victim was then rushed to a nearby government facility.

“Two spent cartridges were found on the scene, and the scene was secured and handed over to the SAPS.

“A search was conducted for the suspects. However, they still remain at large after fleeing into a nearby informal settlement.”
