Watch: Mercedes-Benz catches fire in Long Street Cape Town
A bystander who took a video said the Mercedes-Benz caught fire because the driver continued to rev it in the middle of the street.

A video of a modern Mercedes-Benz catching fire in the middle of Long Street, Cape Town has been making the rounds on social media. While police confirmed that the car caught fire, they said the matter is by no means under investigation.

Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed the incident saying; “Kindly be advised that Cape Town Central police are aware of the incident of the vehicle catching fire in Long Street on Sunday evening [1 November 2020]. No case docket has been registered in [relation] to the matter and it is not under investigation.”
A bystander who filmed a separate video said the car caught fire after continuous revving of the engine of the Mercedes-Benz. Local authorities were then called to the scene.
ESKOM VEHICLE STONED AND SET ALIGHT IN SEPARATE INCIDENT
Not a Mercedes-Benz this time but back in July, a vehicle belonging to Eskom was allegedly stoned and set alight by disgruntled community members in Khayelitsha.
Eskom further said some civilians are “harassing” their staff when they are deployed to certain communities. The power utility added that their employees have the right to stop working should they find themselves in a volatile situation.
“We are seeing a growing number of members of the public surrounding our employees while they are busy with their operations, or others trying to report their faults to technicians in breach of lockdown regulations. This behaviour may expose both our employees and other members of the public to COVID-19.”
“In instances where customers do not fully comply with the protocols, Eskom employees have the right to refuse the completion or continuation of work for their own safety. The work will be suspended and employees withdrawn from the area, especially with the increased risk of exposure to COVID-19.”
