Melissa Muller country’s top matriculant, NOT Simlindele Khumalo

Social media has, since the announcement of Melissa Muller as the country’s top-performing matriculant, questioned the validity of the results after believing it to be KwaZulu-Natal’s Simlindele Khumalo.

A PREMATURE CELEBRATION

This comes after a viral video, taken days before the official announcement, sees Khumalo being prematurely announced as the country’s top achiever in front of his classmates.

In the video, Khumalo can be seen being hyped up by his classmates in song and dance.

To clarify, however, Khumalo was one of the country’s top achievers. Khumalo came out second in quintile four schools nationally while coming out 5th overall in KZN.

Top achievers Quintile 4 nationally:

  1. Uphile Shange, Sidelile High-KZN
  2. Simlindele Thandolwethu Khumalo, Masibumbane High-KZN
  3. Ziphozenkosi Sibongakonke Mntambo, Khombindlela High- KZN

With an overall average of 97.6%, Muller was named the top matriculant for 2023, rising above 717 377 other learners.

The Rhenish Girls’ High School pupil boasts seven distinctions and was also named the top overall performer in maths.
