In a heartening turn of events, the McGregor bridge in the Western Cape, South Africa, is set to reopen after the critical access road was washed away by heavy downpours on 25 September.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde and Provincial Minister for Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers visited the McGregor bridge construction site on 16 October, marking a crucial milestone in the restoration efforts.

Who fixed the McGregor Bridge?

The destruction of the infrastructure leading to the bridge had severed the main access route to the nearby town of Robertson, causing significant disruptions to the community and regional economy. The government, alongside the agriculture sector and civil society organisations, swiftly joined forces to initiate a rapid restoration project.

Minister Simmers lauded the collective effort, stating, “The reopening of this access road will be a significant relief to the economic activity of this town and region with the resumption of the movement of goods and services. The agricultural sector has been severely affected by the damage to this infrastructure. We needed to rebuild this approach at a rapid pace and under safe conditions.”

The flooding in the Western Cape had left many areas inaccessible, with the Department of Infrastructure’s personnel working tirelessly to repair the damaged road infrastructure.

What did the Premier emphasize?

Premier Alan Winde emphasized the importance of reconnecting communities and restoring economic activity. Particularly with the upcoming festive season.
