Free State is the leading province with 89% followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 86% in the Matric Class of 2023.

The Matric Class of 2023 who wrote the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams achieved an overall 82.9% pass rate.
This was revealed by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga when she announced the results on Thursday evening in Randburg.
Over 890 000 full-time and part-time candidates wrote the NSC exam in 2023.
The official pass rate for the class of 2023 was 82.9% which is up from 80.1% in 2022. Motshekga was pleased to announce that all provinces had pass rates above the 75% mark.
Free State is the leading province with 89% (for five years in a row) and is surprisingly followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 86.4%. Over the years it was Gauteng, Free State and Western Cape who were always among the top three best-performing provinces.

The Independent Examination Board (IEB) results for the Matric Class of 2023 were released earlier. Here’s how the learners performed:
In a statement the IEB revealed it has achieved an overall pass rate 98,46% in the National Senior Certificate, a slight 0,04% increase from 2022 where is achieved 98,42%.
