Matric Final Exams: First week marred by absenteeism
It is reported that some matric candidates did not sit down for the exam because they were not ready to write.

The first week of the matric (Grade 12) final exams may be done and dusted but in Gauteng, the issue of absenteeism affected the turnout.
MATRIC FINAL EXAMS GOT UNDERWAY THIS PAST MONDAY
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited a number of examination sites at the beginning of the exams (on Monday). Although he was pleased by the formality of the exams, he expressed concern about absenteeism.
“We have noted a few instances of absenteeism among full-time candidates in our districts. In Tshwane West, a majority of full-time candidates attended,” he said.
“However, about eight candidates approached officials, stating that they were not ready to write; two other candidates did not write due to unknown whereabouts, which is concerning. Three other candidates were also hospitalised due to health issues, and were unable to write,” he added.

ABSENTEEISM AMONG FIRST WEEK FACTORS
In Ekurhuleni South, most full-time candidates also wrote their exam. However, one candidate was caught with a cellphone in the exam centre, which is not allowed.

Chiloane explained that they also recorded a concerning rate of absenteeism among part-time candidates from all districts as well.
“To this end, the department has re-emphasised the commitments which candidates vowed to fulfil by having signed the NSC pledge. Candidates are discouraged from transgressing their pledge. Candidates are urged to always adhere to exam rules and regulations to maintain the integrity of the examinations and their future,” he said.

STRUGGLING CANDIDATES URGED TO SEEK HELP FROM OFFICIALS
Candidates unable to deal with the final exams pressure, Chiloane said, “Learners are urged to use our available structures to express any issues they are facing. Our officials are more than happy to help. Candidates are also encouraged to honour their commitments to these exams and refrain from being absent”.
