An invigilator prevented cheating after an alleged impostor was caught trying to write a matric exam for a part-time candidate in one of the top-performing schools in KwaZulu-Natal.
The incident happened at Phendukani Full Service School in New Castle under the Amajuba District in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal has condemned the incident in the strongest possible terms.
The department’s spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi, said reports indicate an imposter writing on behalf of the candidate on 31 October 2023 at Phendukani Full Service School.
Mahlambi said an invigilator noticed someone sitting on behalf of the candidate who was supposed to be posing as a part-time candidate.
“This matter has been reported to the South African Police Service,” he said.
KZN Education MEC Mbali Frazer assured the public that invigilators have been trained and will detect and deal with any irregularity so that the integrity of the NSC examinations is not compromised.
“What has happened at Phendukani is a clear demonstration of this commitment.
“We condemn in the strongest possible terms this alleged examination irregularity. As a province, we have worked very hard to sharpen our learners for these examinations, and we expect these examinations to be free of irregularities in keeping with the oath that all the learners in the country made,” she added.
