Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced that the matric class of 2023 achieved an overall pass rate of 82.9%, which represents a 2.8% increase on 2022’s pass rate.

Melissa Muller from Rhenish Girls’ High School in Stellenbosch was named as the best performing matric learner in the country.
Muller placed first out of 717 377 learners who sat for the matric exams late last year.

According to IOL, Muller confirmed that she will study mechatronics engineering at the University of Stellenbosch this year.

Muller, who played first team waterpolo and hockey for her school, had some words of advice for the class of 2024.
“Enjoy your year, it’s a jam-packed year. It will get overwhelming, have a support system, your family, ask them for help when needed. I think also stay up to date with your school work, it will help you identify problem areas early on, which will help you avoid the stress of cramming the night before exams.
“My family were very supportive because I get very stressed out during exams and my mom was always checking if I am okay and if I needed anything.”

Muller added that she had incredible support at school as well.
Rhenish Girls’ High School was founded in 1860, making it the oldest girls’ school in South Africa.

It was the second year in a row that the best performing student attended a Western Cape school after Rustenburg Girls’ High School’s Kelly Grace Prowse came out tops in Quintile 5 in 2022, as reported by The South African website.
