Marshall House building set ablaze in Joburg CBD, 200 evacuated

Joburg (EMS) spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said emergency services responded to the building fire at the corner of Marshall and Phillip in the inner city at about 14:00.

Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) swiftly reacted to a blaze at Maboneng’s Marshall House building, as it became engulfed by flames on a Tuesday afternoon.

Multiple reports indicate that homeless individuals were residing within the premises.

MARSHALL HOUSE BUILDING FIRE CAUSE TO BE INVESTIGATED

Robert Mulaudzi, a spokesperson for Joburg EMS, announced the commencement of a probe into the fire’s origin.

“No injuries have been reported thus far, and an inquiry into the fire’s cause is underway,” he said.

200 PEOPLE SAFELY EVACUATED

“Firefighters discovered a four-story structure ablaze and conducted firefighting operations while evacuating individuals from the fourth floor.

Approximately 200 people were safely rescued, and no additional injuries were documented.

SHACK FIRE CLAIMS THE LIFE OF A 26-YEAR-OLD MAN

On Tuesday morning, IOL stated that a shack fire occurred in Doornkop, Soweto, resulting in one person’s death.

The fire happened around 3 am, and a 26-year-old man’s body was found, apparently due to smoke inhalation.

INFORMAL SETTLERS MUST BE CAREFUL

The Citizen conveyed that Mulaudzi advised people, especially those in informal settlements, to be careful with heating tools.

He highlighted that the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services had seen many deadly winter fires.
