Man who killed UKZN student gets 12 years in jail

A 28-year-old man was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for killing a University of KwaZulu-Natal student in 2019

A man convicted of killing a University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) student in 2019 has been handed down a 12-year jail sentence.

Man arrested a few days after the killing of UKZN student

After being found guilty of the murder of Simukelo Zondi, convicted murderer Khayelihle Nzimande was sentenced to twelve years in prison.

The 28-year-old Nzimande was sentenced in the Pinetown Regional Court on 8 December 2022.

Zondi, a 24-year-old student at the UKZN at the time, was reported missing in October 2019.

His burnt body was discovered next to the rugby field at the UKZN in Westville.

Nzimande was apprehended a few days later with the help of fellow students and security officers and charged with murder.

Detective Sergeant Sibongiseni Ngcobo pursued all available avenues to prove the case beyond all reasonable doubts and bring closure to the victim’s family and friends.

Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal  Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, praised Ngcobo for effectively using all investigative techniques to positively link the suspect to the heinous crime that drew global media attention.
