Man killed for demanding his R400 in alleged mob justice incident

Suspects aged between 39 and 62 allegedly killed a 36-year-old man for demanding his R400 in a mob justice incident in Limpopo.

Police in Seshego, Limpopo are investigating a case of murder after a man allegedly died at the hands of mob justice for demanding his R400. 

Three suspects aged between 39 and 62 were arrested on Friday, 14 April 2023. The incident reportedly happened on 29 March. 

MAN KILLED BY MOB JUSTICE FOR DEMANDING HIS MONEY 

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Limpopo, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba it is alleged that on 29 March 2023, at about 23:45 police were called to a scene of murder at Moletjie, Nduna’s Kraal at Ga-Chokoe. 

Upon arrival at the house, a family member showed them a lifeless body of a 36-year-old Phineas Legodi.

Ledwaba said a preliminary investigation revealed that the man was allegedly assaulted by a group of people calling themselves security officers as he went to Nduna’s Kraal demanding his money (R400). 

“The deceased was found with bruises on the buttocks,” the spokesperson said.

SUSPECTS TO APPEAR IN COURT 

Police conducted further investigations by obtaining statements and gathering evidence that led to the arrest of three suspects on Friday, reportedly. 

Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the arrest of the suspects. 

Hadebe said mob justice has a negative impact in the stabilisation of crime in the province, as such, the community should desist from such actions and let the law take its course.

“Anyone who wants to assist police in preventing crime is welcome to join SAPS existing Crime Prevention Structures to ensure that crime is the thing of the past,” Hadebe said. 

The three suspects are expected to appear before Seshego Magistrate’s Court soon on charge of murder.
