Man gets life for the rape of an elderly woman

A man was sentenced to life in prison for the rape of an elderly woman and robbery.

The Taung Regional Court sentenced 26-year-old Cornelius Sedumoeng to life in prison for the rape of a 66-year-old woman and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

MAN GETS LIFE IN PRISON FOR RAPE AND ROBBERY

The evidence presented in court revealed that on 24 October 2021, at Mokgareng village near Taung, Sedumoeng broke into the complainant’s home in the early morning hours while she was asleep.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said when the victim confronted the accused, he assaulted her, raped her, and robbed her of R450 and a cellphone before he fled.

The victim recognized him while he was busy robbing her. She later informed his parents of the incident.

Sedumoeng admitted to rape and robbery. Police recovered the money and cellphone from him.

He was later arrested, and the court denied him bail. He pleaded not guilty to rape and robbery.

THE VICTIM RECOGNISED THE RAPIST

In aggravation of sentence, the state prosecutor, Tecia Khula urged the court not to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment, as the accused took advantage of an elderly woman, whom he knew stayed by herself.

Magistrate Buti Zulu agreed with the state and remarked on the prevalence of gender-based violence and the courts’ responsibility to protect the most vulnerable members of society.

Sedumoeng was sentenced to life in prison for the rape of the woman and 15 years for aggravating robbery.

The Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr. Rachel Makhari, welcomes this conviction.

“We lauded the collaboration of the prosecutor and the investigation officer in ensuring that the victim gets justice,” she remarked.
