Speaking to an external publication, a woman identified as the teen’s sister said the attack happened outside a fast-food restaurant. It comes after Kopano approached the man asking him to pass the salt.

His cousin is said to have been with him. The family of Kopano later opened a case at the Globlersdal police station. Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said police arrested the man at his home Thursday morning.

“The suspect will appear in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Monday. He faces charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He also faces a charge of pointing a firearm.

Meanwhile, a Makweng family member said Kopano complained about chest pains and was taken to the hospital. They also expressed concern about the potential impact of the attack on his health as he has a history of asthma.

Online users have been vocal since the video surfaced. The hashtag #justiceforkopano has been trending, with many online users putting their weight behind the call. Others, however, suggested the man might have a logical reason for attacking Kopano.

“We have a long way to go as black South Africans. Blacks are busy asking, ‘What did the boy do?’ It shows that black people are afraid to act against a white person. They believe [that] a white person is always right. Smh.”

“What he did does not matter. There’s nothing he could’ve done to justify treatment like this. I’ll post what he did shortly, but that is no way to treat a 16-year-old.”
