Young man arrested for fatally wounding intruder with a hammer
A 24-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder after fatally assaulting a 37-year-old intruder with a hammer in Motherwell.

A 24-year-old man is due to appear in the Motherwell Magistrates Court on Friday, 6 January for fatally assaulting a 37-year-old man with a hammer.
MAN FATALLY WOUNDS INTRUDER WITH A HAMMER
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), it is alleged that police were notified on Wednesday, 4 January 2023, of an injured man that was at the Powerline Shacks, NU9 in Motherwell.
Police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart said upon arrival of SAPS, at about 18:10, police interviewed the owner of the informal home.
Swart said the owner informed the police that he discovered an unknown person inside his house, when he arrived at his home. A quarrel ensued, which led to a fight in which the 24-year-old man allegedly used a hammer to assault the intruder. The alleged intruder passed away on the scene and the 24-year-old man was arrested on the spot on a charge of murder.
“The name of the deceased will be released once formal identification is completed. The 24 year-old man is due to appear in the Motherwell Magistrates Court on Friday, 6 January 2023 on the said charge. Investigations are continuing.”

In a separate incident, Eastern Cape Police confirmed the death of a 32-year-old mother of four children who allegedly bludgeoned her four children with a sledgehammer. The incident happened on 9 November at Mhlabubomvu locality, in Engcobo, Eastern Cape.
