Investigators in Makhado (also known as Louis Trichardt) are in search of a group of suspects who are responsible for the brutal murder of a 64-year-old New Town resident.

Makhado community rocked by ruthless death of resident

According to police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the quiet New Town neighbourhood, in Makhado, was rocked by the sound of gunfire between 17;00 and 18:00 on Tuesday 4 February.

It was soon discovered that a 64-year-old male resident had been shot multiple times by unknown suspects. Thus far, Makhado homicide investigators have managed to gather bits and pieces of information about the 64-year-old’s final moments.

“It is alleged that the deceased was entering his home when he was attacked and shot by unknown suspects before they fled the scene with two motor vehicles, a black VW Jetta and a white VW Polo with unknown registration numbers,” Col. Ngoepe indicated

What was the motive behind the killing?

Ngoepe added that Makhado police rushed to the scene but at that point, little could be done to save the victim. In a statement, Ngoepe confirmed that the 64-year-old was “immediately conveyed to the local hospital but was certified dead on arrival.”

Preliminary examinations of the crime scene and records from eyewitnesses have raised possible motives. Without the identity of the suspects involved in the murder, it will be an uphill battled for Makhado investigators to crack this one.

Moreover, theft and robbery as a motive has not been ruled out but investigators do suspect foul play. Ngoepe revealed that there is a possibility that the murder was linked to ongoing taxi violence in Makhado and that the victim was no stranger to the industry.

“The motive behind this incident is not clear at this stage but taxi violence may not be ruled out,” the police statement read.

Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of these suspects, may contact Colonel Nyelisani Mabatha on 082 565 8171 or the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or the nearest Police Station.
