Major bust: Hawks recover copper worth R50 million

Hawks TOMS swiftly mobilised against a criminal syndicate involved in illicit copper trade in Pretoria, taking action on critical information.

On 3 November 2023, the members of the Hawks Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS) sprang into action, operationalizing vital information about a syndicate allegedly involved in a series of criminal activities, including the illicit copper trade in Pretoria.

The TOMS team wasted no time and swiftly descended upon an address on Attie Street, Booysens, Pretoria. There, they confronted the owner of the property, who claimed to have obtained the copper through an auction in Bloemfontein.

What did the suspect do to defend himself?

In an attempt to justify his actions, he presented a Second-hand Goods dealer permit, asserting his legal right to engage in the copper trade.

However, the suspect’s misconception was promptly addressed as he was informed of the necessity to possess a certificate. Permitting the legal possession of copper under the provisions of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015.

The consequences were swift, as the 27-year-old suspect found himself under arrest, and a substantial haul of copper, estimated to be worth over R50 million, was seized.

“The detained suspect is slated to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on 6 November 2023, to face charges related to the illegal possession and trade of copper,” read the SAPS statement.
