Magistrate, SIU Head,  department Director all bid to become the next Public Protector 

The 38 shortlisted candidates are expected to be cut down by the ad hoc committee with selected candidates chosen for interviews.

The Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee to Nominate a Person for Appointment as Public Protector, has just under 10 days to sift through CV’s of 38 candidates to fill the hot seat of the country’s next Public Protector.

The CV’s have been put up on the parliament website for public comment. Public comment should be sent to Pprotector@parliament.gov.za by 21 July 2023.

The contract is an non renewable 7 year tenure. This vacancy has drawn interests from directors of government departments, the head of the Special Investigating Unit and legal heads alike.

The next Public Protector will be appointed in October.

TAKE A LOOK AT CANDIDATES 7-12:

7. Elspeth Khwinana

Khwinana has over 20 years experience in the legal field. She has been running her own firm since 2001, handling an array of legal matters ranging from, criminal, civil and divorce matter amongst others.

Since November 2020, she has presided over a number of cases as an acting judge in the North and South Gauteng High Court. Her last case was in March 2023.

8. Johannah Ledwaba

Ledwaba is currently a magistrate presiding over cases in the criminal, civil and traffic court since 2018. Prior to that she was appointed as Deputy Director in the NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit. Ledwaba obtained her BLuris and LLB from Vista University ( now University of Johannesburg Soweto campus)

9. Roy Ledwaba

Ledwaba, a qualified attorney with a B Proc degree from the University of Limpopo, is currently a Director in the Department of Human Settlements in Mpumalanga. He has held various positions within local government including being a local councillor in the Msukaligwa Municipality for six years to being a Municipal Manager in the Mkhondo Municipality.

CANDIDATES POSES EXTENSIVE LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE

10. Advocate N.M Litabe

Litabe has experience in both civilian courts and military courts having worked as defense council in the South African National Defense Force from 2011 to 2016. Litabe is an admitted advocate of the High Court in South Africa and Lesotho. Until March 2023, Litaba was a corporate director within the Mantsopa Local Municipality before returning to legal practice.

11. Muvhango Lukhaimane

When she is not an acting judge within the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, Lukhaimane, is the Pension Funds Adjudicator- a position she has held since 2013. The office was established to investigate and determine complaints relating to the improper application of fund rules, maladministration, disputes of fact or law, and employer dereliction of duty in respect of pension funds.

12. Advocate Florence Maleka

Maleka is the acting head of Investigations and principal forensic lawyer within the Special Investigating Unit. Maleka has extensive experience in forensic investigations having held various roles in different government entities. She was employed by the City of Johannesburg as a forensic auditor in the Risk and Audit unit from 2007 to 2010. She went on to become a senior forensic investigator for the Government Employees Pension Fund.
