THE MAN WAS ATTACKED ON HIS WAY TO WORK IN DELMAS

Burger van der Merwe (36) from Heidelberg was on his way to Steelpoort for work last month.

According to a social media post on the Proudly Heidelberg Facebook Page, a group of protesters had gathered at Delmas.

The police at the scene said they were monitoring the protest and told Burger it was safe to continue driving.

“Unaware that he had been hit very hard on the head, Burger put his bakkie in reverse, raced out from under the group, and was able to drive to safety at a nearby Sasol filling station.

“Benny, the gas station manager, could immediately see that there was something wrong with Burger. His shirt was full of blood and his eye was swollen shut. Benny gave him water and immediately called Burger’s wife, Jacqueline. Jacqueline’s sister Michelle and her husband Chris immediately drove to Delmas with Jacqueline.”

“The neurologist explained Burger’s condition to me and emphasized that he had suffered very serious injuries,”

Jacqueline told the publication.

Burger had to undergo an emergency operation because the bleeding and pressure on the brain were too severe.

The emergency operation lasted four hours, but Burger was still not out of danger.

“The trauma we have been through since March 30 is impossible to describe.”

Michelle

An innocent man who just wanted to go to work had to fight for his life for the past few days.

HE IS NOW RECUPERATING AT HOME

“What is worst is that the protest is still going on. Pretty much nothing is done to the protesters. “Does someone have to lose their life first before the police actually take action and bring the protest to an end?”

asked Michelle.

The family said they shared their traumatic experience with the public so that everyone would realize the danger during protests.

The police gave Burger the green light to drive, which almost cost him his life.

THE FAMILY WANTS TO WARN OTHERS ABOUT THE DANGERS OF PROTESTS

Burger is now recuperating at home, and only when the swelling on his brain has subsided will further tests be carried out to determine if any damage has been done.

According to a report by Maroela Media, the family had not yet opened a case.
