Equal Education demand government help to fight gang culture in schools

There are some exceptionally traumatic crimes taking place in our country, this though, was truly one of the most obscene.  A 30-year-old teacher was shot and killed by her husband in front of her entire primary school class on Monday morning.

The Mpumalanga Department of Education confirmed the killing of Kate Chiloane at Sedibasathutho Primary School.  The school falls under the Maviljan Circuit in the Bushbuckbridge Local Municipality. The provincial department’s spokesperson Jasper Zwane, revealed the horific details around the killing.

“The husband just got into her classroom and started shooting at her. Even when she tried to run away into the staff room, he followed her and continued shooting at her. He ran away from the scene,” – Provincial department’s spokesperson, Jasper Zwane

IOL reports that Chiloane was a grade 2 teacher and had taught at the school since January 2016.

After the shooting, the husband killed himself after escaping the school and returning home.

Zwane also revealed that lessons at the school were suspended while the department continued to monitor the situation. Officials were also sent to provide counseling services to learners, educators and family members.

Mpumalanga MEC for Education Reginah Mhaule expressed the departments feeling towards the incident.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident and hereby send our condolences to the family of the deceased and those affected by her passing.

“The department will work with SAPS and other relevant institutions to probe the circumstances that led to this regrettable incident,” Mhaule said.
