By now you’ll know that on Thursday night president — for now — Jacob Zuma, after months of trying, finally succeeded in getting rid of finance minister Pravin Gordhan and his deputy, Mcebisi Jonas.

Immediately after the announcement the Rand tanked, the market lost over 5% and, well… the sh*t literally hit the fan. Interestingly, the ANC top brass haven’t been as careful to temper their disappointment as they were with Nhlanhla Nene’s axing — probably because they’ve seen the effect it had on their numbers in last year’s election — and many have come out strongly against Zuma.

Gwede Mantashe spoke to Xolani Gwala and made it very clear that the ANC NEC was, as a matter of fact, told that Gordhan will be fired, and that there was no room for negotiation with the president.

While, for now at least, Zuma’s new cabinet is a reflection of exactly what he wants, they’d be wise to keep their bags packed… and the president should watch his back. Another vote of no confidence is making its way to parliament and Zuma might find that the sentiments among his own MPs have shifted quite substantially.

Gordhan’s axing, and whoever pressured the president into doing it, was a watershed moment for South Africa and it’s the people, not Zuma and his mates, who will come out of this victorious.

Zuma has once again played with the livelihoods of ordinary South Africans and this time he’s going to have to face the music from all sides.
