An incident just as tragic as it is bizarre was reported in Limpopo on Thursday. SAPS have confirmed that a 66-year-old male was strangled to death, with his son’s love life being listed as a major factor.

Limpopo “witchcraft” murder

The mother (62) and her two sons (aged 35 and 43 respectively) were all arrested on suspicion of murder. Police have ascertained that the deceased had been accused of witchcraft by his immediate family. It’s understood that one of his children thought his dad had put a spell on him, causing his marriages to fail:

“The incident took place at Tiyani village in Hlanganani policing area outside Giyani. It is alleged that Mr Samson Hlungwani was accused of witchcraft by the three and was, on Tuesday 31 December 2019 at about 08:00, subsequently strangled inside one of the rooms.”

“This after one of the sons complained that his father bewitched him as every time he marries a woman, she doesn’t stay long. The police reacted to a report about the incident and on arrival at the scene, the deceased was found with bruises lying motionless in one of the rooms.”

“Desist from witchcraft-related murders” – SAPS

The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has condemned this incident and, warning community members to desist from accusing other people of practicing witchcraft and then killing them. We reckon a stronger term than “desist” would have been more appropriate, but still…

All three suspects have appeared at Tiyani Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. The incident has sent shockwaves across the local community, after one of their senior members senselessly lost his life.
