Limpopo chief dies in a car accident

The community of Ga-Selwane village in Ba-Phalaborwa, Limpopo, is in mourning following the untimely death of Kgoshi Tebogo Phillip Malatji in a car accident on Sunday, May 14.

The accident occurred along Selwane Road in the evening. The accident killed three people on the scene and injured five, according to the police.

HOW THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED?

The chief was allegedly on his way home from a local soccer tournament. An oncoming car collided with his BMW and overturned on the road next to Mathipa Mountain. Both car drivers died on the scene.

Cllr Merriam Malatji, Mayor of Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, who has visited the royal family, said this is a big loss for the people of Selwane and the society at large.

“We have lost a man of integrity, visionary and astute leadership of our community who was always on the forefront of community development. Kgoshi Tebogo Phillip Malatji ( Kgoshi Selwane) was a visionary and dedicated servant of the community who served the community council with diligence and sobriety”.

MORE INFO ABOUT THE CHIEF

Kgoshi Tebogo Malatji became the sixth chief of Ba-Phalaborwa Ba-Selwane on 30 October 2010. He obtained his LLB degree from the University of Limpopo.

In 2013 there were attempts to dethrone him as the chief with allegations that he was not the rightful chief of the Selwane tribe.

The chief will be laid to rest at Moshate Cemetery on Saturday 27 May.
