Libode: Man arrested for murdering eldery woman, raping two toddlers

The community of Libode, EC has been left reeling by the devastating crimes of a 30-year-old suspect. The alleged rapist and murderer is due in court.

Crimes of an unspeakably-horrendous nature were reported in Libode, this weekend, after a grandmother was murdered and two young children were sexually violated in the Eastern Cape town. The SA Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that a suspect was arrested on Tuesday morning.

It is understood that the 30-year-old accused entered the house of the 72-year-old and found her with the two young children. Preliminary investigation suggests that the elderly woman had suffered multiple stab wounds before she was left to die in a mattress outside her room.

Her two grandchildren were at the property, and they were kidnapped during the ordeal. The kids, who are aged just four and five respectively, were then raped by the twisted criminal. Both of the youngsters have survived, and they are receiving expert care for their trauma after returning home.

SAPS nab their suspect

Police officials in Libode released a statement on the matter earlier in the day. They revealed that the 30-year-old remanded in custody is facing four very serious charges, after the local community helped identify the main suspect.

“An order from the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga for a 72 hour activation plan has yielded positive results. Cases of murder, kidnapping, house robbery and rape have been opened against the suspect. He is expected to appear in Libode Magistrate Court soon.”

“General Ntshinga applauded the work of the police who did not sleep in order to ensure that the suspect is arrested within a very short space of time. She also appreciated the community of Nyandeni for partnering with the police in exposing the criminal elements hiding within their villages.”

Where is Libode?

Libode is a small town of 5000 inhabitants in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is situated on the R61 road from Port St Johns to Mthatha and serves as the administrative seat of the Nyandeni Local Municipality, which is part of the OR Tambo District Municipality.
