COVID-19 latest: SA cases clock 100 000-mark, with 61 new deaths

South Africa reached another unwanted milestone on Monday, with the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases now at 101 590.

A total of 4 288 new COVID-19 cases in the space of 24 hours bumped South Africa to over 100 000 known infections on Monday.

The Department of Health has issued out the latest update, where it was revealed that the total caseload is now at 101 590, with the death toll now also just touching distance from 2 000.

This is after 61 new fatalities were recorded, with total deaths now nine away from another milestone at 1 991. The recovery rate remains at over half the cumulative cases, with total recoveries at 53 444.

This is after over 1,5 million tests were conducted since the pandemic broke out. These are almost equally distributed between the private and public sector, with a 49%-51% split between the two respectively.

The Western Cape still accounts for more than half of the total cases recorded in South Africa, but Gauteng has also seen a significant climb in recent weeks after taking up a targetted testing strategy, with the Eastern Cape also not too far behind.

Globally, the latest figures push South Africa into the top 20 in terms of caseload, overtaking Canada into 18th place, while the number of active cases place the country in the top ten.

South Africa is 25th in the world in terms of death toll, with countries such as the United States, Brazil and the United Kingdom recording the most fatalities.
