Taxi Violence: Two killed in Langa shooting

Two people have been killed in a shooting in Langa near Cape Town. It looks like it could be taxi violence flaring up again.

Taxi violence reared its ugly head in the Cape this year as warring taxi associations spent months around the negotiation table. All the talking wasn’t just done around the table though. A lot of it was also done in the streets. While the situation has been calm for the last two months or so, a shooting incident in Langa this weekend is causing some concern.

More taxi violence? Langa shootout leaves two dead

Arrive Alive and emergency service group Lima Charlie have confirmed that two people were killed in the shooting that took place on Saturday night. Paramedics arrived on the scene and found two fatalities.

But where does the taxi violence angle come in? Newzroom Afrika journalist Athi Mtongana was able to share video from the scene.

The war on our roads?

While Western Cape SAPS are yet to confirm who’s who. Community reports indicate a taxi driver and an off duty police officer were both shot during the apparent attack.

Things may have been calm in the Western Cape up until this weekend. But it’s been a different story for taxi violence in Gauteng. Last month, 4 taxis were torched in the middle of the Johannesburg CBD. The month before that, three people were shot and killed at the Joe Slovo taxi rank.
