Portia Msimang heard cries while on her morning jog

She was jogging at a sports field in Umlazi when she heard what she thought was a cat crying.

Msimang said she did a second round and heard the same noise before asking one of her neighbours for help.

Her neighbour followed her to the spot she heard the cries and they found a baby.

A baby boy, naked and covered in mosquito bites was found in wet grass.

Msimang explained that community members quickly made their way to the field to assist.

According to ECR News, the baby boy was rushed to a nearby clinic while some community members made calls to the Department of Social Development.

She is a mother of two and hopes to foster the newborn

Msimang who is a mother of two boys said seeing the baby boy motivated her to start the application process to foster him.

“I said there must be a reason God made me come to the grounds for a jog. I have got two sons and I am a single parent. I have got my own baking business. I spoke to my sons and we decided with my boys that we would like to foster the baby,”

she said.

The Department confirmed that the baby boy is doing well and is healthy while a case of child abandonment has been opened with the South African Police Service (SAPS).

In terms of the foster care process Msimang hopes to become part of, the Department says this could be lengthy.

It explained that the process includes screenings and house checks.
