KZN welcomes 86 newborns on New Year’s Day

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) welcomed a total of 86 newborns on New Year’s Day, 1 January 2023.

TEENS AMONG THE NEW MOTHERS IN KZN

The KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube along with the provincial Health Minister Nomagugu Simelane welcomed children born on the first day of the new year by showering them with gifts.

“Currently, there are 86 children in total, 50 girls and 36 boys.”

PROVINCE CONCERNED ABOUT TEENAGE PREGNANCY

According to KZN department of health, Addington Hospital in Durban was the one that welcomed the first baby boy in the new year of 2023. He weighs 3.4kg and was born in the middle of the night to a 17-year-old mother. The father of the child is 19 years old.

The youngest mother is 15 years old, and she gave birth at a hospital in Port Shepstone. The father of the child is also 15 years old.

There are also two 16-year-old mothers. One gave birth at Queen Nandi Hospital and the other gave birth at Nkandla Hospital.

Minister Simelane also expressed concern about the age of mothers who give birth at a young age because their minds and bodies are not ready to carry a child, consequently putting their lives at risk and their children.

MBOMBELA MAYOR WELCOMES NEWBORNS

Meanwhile, the City of Mbombela Executive Mayor, Cllr Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko took time yesterday morning as the first citizen of the city to celebrate and welcome all babies born on the first day of the year 2023.

She showered them with gifts and she said; “Congratulations to all of you for your bundles of joy, as we start the new year, we all know that is only God who gives us children as a blessing.
We come to welcome you and to give our best wishes to all of you as the City of Mbombela”.

Barberton General Hospital had only one new baby born around 02:20 into the Year 2023. However, a total of 13 new babies were born between 27 December 2022 and 1 January 2023.
