In a concerted effort to combat cross-border crime and enhance security, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government is taking decisive action to fortify the South Africa-Mozambique border wall.

Led by Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, the government has intensified efforts to expedite the construction of a concrete barrier wall spanning vulnerable sections of the border.

Border wall initiative bolsters security efforts

The Border wall initiative, born out of the imperative to stem the tide of vehicle theft and illicit trade, underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens and resources.

Since its inception in 2018, the project has evolved into a multifaceted strategy encompassing 25 kilometers of the border area, strategically divided into three phases.

Premier Dube-Ncube, along with Operation Siyahlola, visited the Manguzi region to check on the construction progress. She was pleased with the progress, especially in areas like Gate 6, which are known for crime. Dube-Ncube emphasised the need to speed up construction to improve border security.

“We have directed the Department of Transport to fast track the raising of the walls,”Dube-Ncube said.

Moreover, the government’s proactive stance extends beyond physical barriers. As evidenced by diplomatic endeavors to coordinate cross-border crime-fighting initiatives.

Collaborating with stakeholders such as the Border Management Authority, SAPS Specialized KZN Stabilizing Team, and local leaders, the government is forging a united front against criminal syndicates that threaten border communities.

Barrier success: Crime syndicates stymied

The actions taken are already showing results, with important criminals caught and stolen vehicles stopped. Premier Dube-Ncube mentioned cases where barrier walls stopped vehicles from crossing the border illegally.

The government is working hard to reduce crime across borders. Building border walls shows they’re taking action to keep things safe and work with others to do it.

By fortifying the border wall, KwaZulu-Natal aims to bolster national security. Also safeguard economic interests, and foster safer communities along the border region.
