The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in North West, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal

The warning is for Sunday, 19 November 2023.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN PARTS OF THE COUNTRY

The weather service said the severe thunderstorms producing strong damaging winds, hail, and heavy downpours may result in localised damage to informal houses, localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas, and bridges.

The thunderstorms are expected over the western parts of the North West, north-western parts of The Free State, and western KwaZulu-Natal.

ABOVE-NORMAL RAINFALL EXPECTED THIS SUMMER

Following severe thunderstorms and hail that wreaked havoc in Gauteng, the weather service said it expected above-normal rainfall and weather extremes to continue.

The weather service said the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is currently in an El Niño state and, according to the latest predictions are, expected to persist through most of the summer months.

The ENSO’s typical impact on Southern Africa is in favour of generally drier and warmer conditions during the summer seasons from October to March. However, current global forecasts indicate a great deal of uncertainty for the typical drier conditions that South Africa experiences during typical El Niño seasons, particularly over the eastern parts of the country. Weather extremes will continue to occur occasionally during the summer as much as drier conditions are expected.
