The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has encouraged vehicle owners to change their personalised licence numbers at no cost before the set deadline.

KZN DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT NOTICE ON OLD PERSONALISED LICENCE NUMBERS

The department reminded vehicle owners in the province following the commencement of the new KZN Licence Numbering System late last year.

“Vehicle owners who purchased a specific licence number e.g. NP1234, may, upon the renewal of the vehicle licence or within 24 months of the commencement of the KZN Licence Numbering System, change the specific licence number plate to a personalised licence number at no cost or forfeit that specific licence number without reimbursement,” the Transport Department notified.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU MISS THE DEADLINE?

The Department cautioned that if a specific licence number is not replaced with a personalised licence number by the 30th of November 2025, the specific licence number holder will lose the specific licence number and will be issued with a system-generated licence number or may purchase a personalised licence number at the applicable fee.

ABOUT THE ROLL OUT OF THE NEW NUMBER PLATES

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport rolled out this ground-breaking vehicle licence numbering system on 1 December 2023, marking an end to the traditional number plates.

Under the new system, number plates adopted a continuous numbering approach, however, eliminating town and demarcation depictions.
All registration numbers issued in the province now carry the identifier ‘ZN’.

“The operationalisation and commencement of the new numbering system also follow several consultations with various stakeholders, including the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), and manufacturers of blank number plates. The department has tested the ENaTIS (Electronic National Administration Traffic Information System) system and can confirm that the system is now able to activate the new numbering system, supported by RTMC,” the department said.
