Storms, heavy rain and strong winds expected in KwaZulu-Natal

Severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain, strong winds and hail are expected in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and other provinces.

Severe thunderstorms with possible heavy rain that could lead to flooding is expected in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Limpopo. 

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 alert valid until 23:00 on Friday, 26 January. 

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AND HEAVY RAIN IN KWAZULU-NATAL AND OTHER PROVINCES

The weather service said severe thunderstorms with possible heavy downpours leading to localised flooding are expected over the northern parts of Gauteng, western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, north eastern parts of North West as well as the southern areas of Limpopo. 

Specifically to KZN, the weather service said the thunderstorms may be severe and will be accompanied by heavy downpours, strong winds, hail and excessive lightning which may result in localised impacts.

POSSIBLE IMPACTS:

  • Localised damage to infrastructure, settlements, vehicles, livelihood and livestock.
  • Localised flooding of susceptible roads. 
  • Difficult driving conditions on dirt roads.
  • Minor motor vehicle accidents due to slippery roads and/reduced visibility.
