KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police confronted and fatally shot five wanted suspects after they allegedly initiated a violent gunfight.

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police shot dead five suspects after they allegedly “attempted a gun battle” on Thursday afternoon on Abbot Francis Road in Marianhill.

Operationalised intelligence led police to the wanted suspects. When they were told to pull over, the suspects allegedly opened fire, and a shootout broke out.

“After the shootout, five suspects were found to have suffered fatal gunshot wounds,” said KZN spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

One of the suspects was on the police’s wanted list in connection with a series of murders, including the Marianhill Scrapyard killing, which saw five people killed in separate incidents in February, and other serious violent crimes.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will be investigating Thursday’s shootout, said the police spokesperson.
