Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain in THREE provinces TODAY

Severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain, strong winds and hail are expected in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Free State.

Severe thunderstorms with possible damaging winds and heavy rain has been forecast for parts of Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. 

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for Sunday, 28 January. 

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN PARTS OF SA 

The weather service said severe thunderstorms with possible damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and heavy downpours are expected in places over Gauteng, extreme eastern parts of Free State as well as the western parts of Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal. 

The heavy rain could lead to localised flooding of susceptible low lying areas and bridges as well as localised disruption for high- sided vehicles.

WEATHER WARNINGS ISSUED

The weather service had also issued another yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms with possible heavy rain that could lead to flooding is expected in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Limpopo on Saturday, 27 January.

The weather service said thunderstorms with possible heavy downpours leading to localised flooding are expected over the northern parts of Gauteng, western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, north eastern parts of North West as well as the southern areas of Limpopo. 

Specifically to KZN, the weather service said the thunderstorms may be severe and will be accompanied by heavy downpours, strong winds, hail and excessive lightning which may result in localised impacts.
