Men arrested for possession of protected succulents worth R3.5 million

Four men were arrested for possession of protected succulent plants after the Kuruman Stock Theft unit received a tip-off.

The Northern Cape police arrested four men for possession of protected species in Kuruman on Tuesday, 14 June. The succulent plants they were caught with are worth millions of rand.

FOUR MEN ARRESTED FOR POSSESSION OF PLANTS

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Mosimaneotsile Letsapa said the Kuruman Stock Theft unit received a tip-off and intercepted the four men on the N14 highway. The suspects were travelling in a bakkie and a truck.

The four men were arrested for possession of protected succulent plants and the matter was referred to the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit for further investigation.

“The JTG Acting District  Commander, Brigadier Johnny Besnaar applauded Kuruman Neighbourhood Watch and Rhino security for working hand in glove with the police in fighting crime and also commended the Kuruman stock theft and endangered species unit for the excellent work,” said Letsapa.

The four men are expected to appear in the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court imminently.
