Police in the North West said a 47-year-old man is expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 19 May, in connection with the alleged kidnapping and murder of his two-year-old daughter.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in the North West, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani, said the dead body of a toddler was found in the ceiling of her father’s home in Alabama just outside Klerksdorp.
According the information available to SAPS, the suspect headed to his girlfriend’s – and mother of his daughter – residence in Extension 20, Jouberton on Thursday, 13 May and took the child without her consent.
“It is alleged that the mother was in hospital when the suspect took the child, she was discharged on Friday, 14 May 2021 and started searching for the toddler, but could not find her,” said Funani.
On Monday, 17 May, two days after a missing persons case was opened at Jouberton Police Station, and a day after the father was arrested for kidnapping and refusing to tell SAPS where the toddler was, neighbours noticed a foul odour emanating from the suspect’s house.
The neighbours entered the house to investigate and allegedly found the lifeless body of the child and notified police. The father, who was already in custody, had his charges upped to murder.
Major General Dintletse Molefe, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, thanked the neighbours and members of the community for their cooperation and said the detectives must do everything in their power to oppose bail.
In an unrelated incident, SAPS announced the conviction and sentencing of a 19-year-old suspect who raped a 14-year-old in 2019.
“The 14-year-old victim from Dumisani Makhaye village, Empangeni alleged that on 1 January 2019 at 8:00, she was on her way to school when she was stopped by her 19-year-old boyfriend,” said spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala.
The accused held his victim captive at his home where he raped her and refused to let her go to school. He released her later in the day and she reported the incident to her mother and a case of rape and kidnapping was opened.
The accused was eventually convicted and sentenced to 18 years for rape and three years for kidnapping, said SAPS.
