Khayalethu Magadla: Here’s how the beloved boy’s body was found

The search and rescue team comprising of various disciplines has explained how the body of Khayalethu Magadla was recovered.

A rescue and recovery team has explained in detail how they were able to locate the body of six-year-old Khayalethu Magadla who reportedly slipped and fell into a manhole in Dlamini, Soweto on 12 June 2022 while playing with friends. 

Despite authorities deploying robotic equipment in the search operation, including the isolation of a specific reservoir in an attempt to find the missing child, all the efforts had yielded no positive results. Magadla’s body was finally found on Saturday, 2 July by a rescue and recovery team comprising of various disciplines including emergency services and Joburg Water. 

HOW  KHAYALETHU MAGADLA’S BODY WAS FOUND 

Nana Radebe-Kgiba from City of Johannesburg Emergency Services said Khayalethu Magadla was found from the splitter chamber on the first manhole towards the samp situated near the Eldorado Park Wastewater Plant. 

Radebe said it had been an excruciating 20 days for the family since search began for the 6-year-old boy. 

“The EMS specialised team has consistently continued with search through the challenging pipeline system.  The Urban Search and Rescue teams have covered at least 20km from Dlamini to Eldorado Park. The City is committed to assist the family with all that is necessary following this tragic event.”

Radebe also commended Joburg Water for the drainage of water from different sewer systems in order to help search for Magadla. 

“We send our deepest condolences to the family in this time of difficulty and hope they find closure now that Khayalethu is found,” she said. 

City of Johannesburg MMC for Public Safety, David Tembe said they hope that the Magadla family finds closure now that their son’s body has been found. 

Tembe also acknowledged the Soweto community for giving support to the six-year-old’s family during the difficult time they were faced with.
