Julius Malema, Mmusi Maimane in Twitter duel over Vodacom issue

Julius Malema was certainly in the mood for an argument on Wednesday, and took his issues to the Twitter page of Mmusi Maimane.

In one of the more civil exchanges between Julius Malema and Mmusi Maimane, we saw the leaders of the two main opposition parties get into a debate over the Vodacom saga.

The telecommunications giants confirmed that they had resolved all issues with the EFF, after members of the red berets were alleged to have orchestrated the destruction of a Vodacom store in Polokwane.

Why Julius Malema and Mmusi Maimane had it out on Twitter

However, Mmusi Maimane did not feel that the company had taken a stand against the “thuggery” that was committed. The DA leader then vowed to stop doing business with the network, and that was enough to pique the interest of Juju.

Malema asked why the DA would bother to “do business” with the EFF if they were going to sever their ties with Vodacom over ideological differences. The two parties have entered several coalitions together in municipalities across South Africa. But in the two years since the local elections, their relationship has soured.

Here’s how it all played out:

Malema vs Maimane

Malema never got a reply and was left hanging by Maimane in the end. Duty calls, and all that. It marked a very rare online exchange between the two, who are more accustomed to going hell-for-leather at each other in Parliament.

EFF Councillor identified in Vodacom vandalism

Earlier on Tuesday, one of the DA’s Councillors in Polokwane wrote to the speaker of the regional legislature to institute disciplinary proceedings against EFF member Oupa Ramaphoko.

Ramaphoko allegedly used his vehicle to transport EFF members and participated in vandalising a Vodacom store at Mall of the North over the weekend causing damage to the value of R500 000. This comes two days after the DA opened criminal charges against the red berets for the same incident on Monday.

If found guilty of contravening the Code of Conduct for Councillors as outlined in the Municipal Systems Act of 2003, Ramaphoko would have to face the Ethics Committee and could end up losing his job.
