JMPD is sweeping out undocumented informal traders

Informal traders without trading permits are not safe from the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD).

The by-law and crime enforcers have embarked on an operation to bring back law and order in the City of Johannesburg.

UNAUTHORISED INFORMAL TRADERS TARGETED BY JMPD

Several hotspots were visited by JMPD officers where goods were either confiscated or impounded by the officers.

This operation was conducted by the By-law management unit, according to the JMPD Facebook page.

The message was clear from JMPD and that is, “no person shall carry on the business of an Informal Trader at a place or in an area where Informal Trading is prohibited or restricted in the City of Johannesburg.”

Several informal trading hotspots that were stormed by JMPD included the spot near Shoprite in Glen Ridge, Protea Glen; a spot near Eyethu Mall in Orange Farm, and the strip along Wanderers and De Villiers Street in the JHB CBD.

“Kindly enquire how to obtain an Informal Trading permit at your local municipality offices to avoid impoundments,” JMPD warned unverified traders.

HOW TO OBTAIN AN INFORMAL PERMIT TO TRADE ON THE STREETS

According to the City of Johannesburg, in order to be a permitted informal trader, the following steps are required:


In order for a permit to be issued the following is required from DED Informal Traders: COJ Certificate of Acceptance, proof of trading and a valid ID or passport. JM Informal Trader, verification of buyer details must be confirmed via the JM internal system and the buyer’s unique code must be placed on the permits issued.

The Registration and collection of permits can be done at 66 Jorrisen Street for DED registered informal traders and at the Joburg Market (JM) at 4 Fortune Road for JM registered informal trader buyers.
