JMPD arrests armed robbers in Selby showdown

In Selby, Johannesburg, two suspects, aged 30 and 32, were arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) IIOC Undercover Reaction Unit.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) IIOC Undercover Reaction Unit arrested two men, aged 30 and 32, in Selby, Johannesburg, on charges of armed robbery and possessing an unlicensed firearm.

On Friday, September 1, 2023, officers were patrolling when they witnessed a group of men engaging in an armed robbery and an apparent attempted hijacking at the intersection of Anderson Street and Main Reef Road in Selby.

JMPD arrests armed robbers

The JMPD turned on their blue lights and siren, prompting the men to run into a nearby open area.

The officers pursued and captured two suspects, seizing an unlicensed firearm, one live bullet, and the victim’s cellphone.

The victim was called to the scene and identified the suspects as the individuals who had robbed him.

The two men were taken into custody at Johannesburg Central SAPS and are scheduled to appear in court later this week.

Flying Squad acts on business robbery tip

On Tuesday, 29 August, The South African reported that the Maitland Flying Squad members acted on a tip regarding suspects in a Lingelethu-West business robbery.

They went to Mthawelanga Street in Ilitha Park and conducted a thorough search, resulting in the seizure of a 9mm pistol, a fake firearm, phones, and cash.

Seven men, aged 31 to 35, were arrested by the police for possessing an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and presumed stolen items.

After being charged, the suspects will be required to appear in Cape Town and Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Courts for their alleged offenses.
